FOURTH TRIMESTER

What more can be said about the birth of a child? A lot, it turns out. Fourth Trimester, the latest book by the exceptionally gifted poet Caroline O’Connor Thomas, demonstrates that the deepest truths about this bizarre and beautiful occurrence can only be spoken in the language of metaphor. These poems are so strange and clear and generous and singular. If you are a parent, you will recognize the feelings in these poems. If you were born, you will understand something more about what it is like to be blessed and cursed with the maternal power to “make something of dust.”

from FOURTH TRIMESTER

I stood with you in the empty noise of the morning feeling for the impulse of your breath.

Above us, the peach white of another day growing—

I showed you the window, unsure if you saw.

I slow danced with my spectacle in the late July wind and sun.
I pleaded—

God give me memory of only this moment, this boring miracle.

This one, not all the others like it. This one.
